Subject:SGA Cancelled
Time:09:35 pm
You know, I will be the first to say that Stargate Atlantis isn't the best television show out there... it has plenty of flaws, but they are lovable flaws and it's fun and, when the writers remember that, it is hard to beat.  It's like all good comfort food... simple, easy to swallow, and it just makes you feel good.  It may not be fillet mignon in a port wine reduction, but sometimes you can't beat a cheese burger with all the fixings.  I don't think Sci Fi gave SGA all the chances it deserved and I don't feel the producers gave it a chance, period.  To hear the writers and producers talk about it in comparison to SG1, it was obvious they felt SGA wasn't up to par when in reality the character dynamics are better than what we'd seen on SG1 in over five years.  Over the run of SG1, the characters seemed to grow apart, whereas on SGA they just grow closer.  The last three seasons have just gotten better and better... the writing, character development, team interaction, hell the acting itself has improved.  Add to that the improved ratings and awards (won and nominated) and you would think TPTB would realize they had a solid show on their hands, especially in the sci fi genre.  Instead they decide to cancel it and make a few movies and play with their new toy Stargate Universe... not to mention ruin my entire fucking week right before the episode I've been waiting to see for months.

I'm frustrated, disappointed, and, yes, pissed.  I started out as an SG1 fan and, admittedly, didn't really care for SGA when it first came on.  But then I saw The Defiant One during a minimarathon  during the midseason hiatus and John and Rodney hooked me and I've never looked back.  SG1 lost its glimmer a few years ago when RDA started limiting his appearances.  I love Ben Browder and Claudia Black but even they couldn't save the show, especially when they started the whole Ori storyline.  Mobius was the perfect ending point for SG1 and they kept going.  Maybe they're worried SGA will start that slow death, as well, but to me, it hasn't even reached its peak yet.  And what frustrates me most is that of all the things SGA did to make me happy, the best was that it inspired me to write. I have to admit that it scares me a little bit to think that part of my life might come to an end with the series because no other show in the past five years has inspired me to write and I'm not seeing anything promising on the horizon.  As much as I'll miss my team love and John and Rodney snark and the fun I have on Friday nights with them, it's getting hit by a story idea that eats me up until I start typing that I think I'll miss most of all.  And the worst part is that I can't see any really good reason why.

Seriously, I HIGHLY double this was sci-fi's doing for once. And that takes a lot for me to say because their treatment of Farscape still niggles (Bonnie Hammer is atrocious and was behind The 4400 getting axed also). But this -- I think TPTB have been planning it for a little while. The clues were there, the talk about SGU, the talk about how they would continue Atlantis in 'some form', the 'not going to run two shows simultaneously, so Atlantis has to end for SGU to begin' crap. This...this was MGMs decision and rests at the foot of them wanting to push SGU and make more money by cheaper production costs and selling the SGA DVDs because (lets face it) we'll buy them! Just like we did SG-1 and I didn't even think those two movies were all that great.

But for me, short of a casting miracle, I'm done. I will not be tuning in to SGU...okay okay, bitterness shouldn't make me say never because one never does know, but I'm sooooooo angry that MGM pulled the rug out from under SGA when it was totally NOT warranted on the show's success front. It was really coming into its own.

I have to say I'll give SGU a shot. My first reaction is screw them and their new little show, too! But then I a) remember I didn't like SGA the first couple of eps, b) I had no clue who any of the cast of SGA was, except Rodney, who I hated on SG1 and grew to love on SGA, and c) the number of any sort of sci fi television shows is dwindling quickly. I mean, we have half a season of BSG left, Dr. Who is gone for at least a year, Torchwood is limited to a 5 ep miniseries, and Kripke is even saying Supernatural was never meant to run more than 5 seasons.

I've always got the impression that SGA was TPTB's transition boyfriend... you know the one you go after when your true love dumps you and you know it won't work out but it's good until you find something new. They knew the writing was on the wall for SG1 and they didn't want the franchise to end, but at the same time, they never committed to SGA and it never had that special place in their hearts that SG1 did. And in so many ways SGA is such a superior show which is why I want to just throttle them. Also, I don't understand why they wouldn't want to have a year or two of overlap with the new show to draw in the viewers instead of putting all their eggs in one basket.

I loved SGA from Rising on. It was those stupid 'get in the gate' commercials that summer that sucked me. That dark-haired Sheppard character seemed so dam likable I couldn't be mad, plus, SG-1 was still being given its due, etc etc. Soon SGA took over SG-1 in my fandom love. And omg, Hide and Seek just sealed my fate.

I agree with you completely on SGAs status. Why they were so cool towards it when they'd worked so hard to GET it, just boggles me then and now. It's been a fun ride and while I do think their writing has suffered, when it has, it was the cast and their chemistry that carried the day. And that is not something a show gets right every time.

I want to say I'll never watch SGU just to make a point but I AM a sci-fi junkie and there's very little new sci-fi around and what has been showing up has gotten killed barely before it has a chance to take its first breath (Jericho, Moonlight).

I probably will at the least tune in, but until it airs I'll probably be grouching the whole way 'they killed SGA for THIS?' It has a lot harder road to prove than it would've if TPTB hadn't killed SGA to make way for their new baby. I guess we'll get to be resentful older siblings for a little bit and whether we love it, depends on what they do with it.

The ironic thing is that when I watched Rising, I was still wondering wtf they were thinking giving that jerk McKay a staring role? *G* And he really was still a little jerk like in Rising (although now I go back and watch the SG1 eps he was in and don't think he was that bad.) It was Weir heavy and John was okay but not stand out in my opinion. I actually didn't see Hide and Seek until I got the Season 1 DVD because I wasn't dead set on watching it again. I caught part of Underground but missed the wonderful John and Rodney interaction in the what hidden underground bunker scene. It was really a total fluke that I caught The Defiant One and fell in love with the boys. Within a week I was reading fanfic and a month later I was writing it. So, I guess the moral of the story is you have to give these things a shot. And I'm like you about feeling some resentment toward Universe. If they had it on the same time as SGA, I think I would be excited about it. So, it seems like a bad marketing move on their part if nothing else.
